WATER RESOURCES MANAGEMENT, WATER SUPPLY AND SANITATION |
|
Freshwater is no more an infinite resource. Pollution of surface water and heavy withdrawal and arsenic contamination of sub-surface water are making this finite resource gradually scarcer. This is complicated by temporal and spatial variation in availability of precipitation, resultant surface storage and generated streamflow. Thus, as with any scarce resource, it has long become imperative to plan and manage water resources for better utilization of this invaluable bounty of nature.
For the same reason stated above, potable water for human consumption is fast becoming scarce. In the built up urban areas, where supply of water is a must, there is little recharge of groundwater due to paved and covered surfaces. With concentrated population, there is also accumulation of sewerage and human wastes which should be collected and transported for disposal. Water supply and sanitation are thus an essential prerequisite in community life. The challenges are many and so are scopes for interventions - interventions HB ready to make.
